The Phoenix Seven Stories #6

Starting Monday, January 11th Cable Muse Network is sharing stories of “The Phoenix Seven” every day. From the greyhound race track to forever homes.

VENGER

January 07, 2010

My story about adopting Venger from Greyhound Companions of New Mexico; I had adopted a greyhound from Judy two years ago, I had to fill an application out at that time. Once the application was sent in, they contacted me and arranged a home visit to make sure I was someone who would take care of a dog and make sure my home and yard were suitable for an adoption, so this time I didn't have to go through that process again. This time I sent Judy an email saying I was interested in adopting one of the dogs coming from Phoenix. The next thing I saw were the dog pictures on Judy’s email site but still had no idea which dog would ultimately be mine.

When I was told that Venger would be my boy, I began to prepare for him. As I have five other dogs, most of the preparation was getting the other dogs used to the fact that a new brother would be coming.

The day Judy brought him to me; he was immediately attached to me at the hip. I gave him a dog bed and put it next to my side of the bed that is his bed now. He adjusted much more quickly to being here than my other greyhound Patch. He loves to run around my four acres. I have brought him stuffed animals that he carries around, plays tug of war with the other dogs, throws the stuffed animal up in the air, he chases around with the other dogs, and goes out to bark with the other dogs.

Many people don't want greyhounds because they tend to not bark very much, Venger isn't that way at all, he protects his house and land. When I walk around outside, I catch him placing his head in my hand as we walk. He pulls toys out of my pocket. I have a bucket with doggie cookies in it and he has learned to help himself to the cookies. He is so sweet to the other dogs and my three cats, you couldn't ask for a nicer sweeter dog than Venger. I am so lucky to have him.

About Venger and the snow; he loved it. He would lie there with his nose in the snow and of course he liked licking his snow cones. He doesn't get as cold as Patch, the other greyhound I have. I have to put a doggie coat on Patch if we are outside too long. You know, all dogs smile and each have their own unique smile. I notice that when I am playing with Venger or loving on him, he gets a big smile on his face. When I got Venger, he was on the thin side, but now it appears that he has put on approximately 15-20 lbs. so now his ribs and back bone don't stick out.

[Venger] is in a multiple pet home - dogs and cats - and is doing great.  A big boy with a dark brindle coat.  The woman who adopted him is amazing with animals. In my opinion, she's kind of like a "Dog Whisperer" in that she has 6 dogs and 3 cats and they coexist in extraordinary peace - quite a remarkable sight to see!
